The last thing that’s expected from a weekly track’s season opener is for someone to come in and upset the regulars.
So when Connecticut driver Max Zachem won the Modified opener at the always tough Riverhead Raceway on Long Island, it was a shocker.
But there was more. The car Zachem drove, owned by Islander Ken Vogel, was a home built one, racing amid a sea of ‘bought cars’.
Zachem has been making waves on the rugged NASCAR Whelen Modified Touring Series for the past three years, inching ever closer to a breakthrough win on that circuit. If and when that happens, it will be no surprise.
This one at Riverhead was stunning – and, from multiple viewpoints, a Newsmaker!
