Though the basic object of auto racing is to drive cars faster than anyone else, winning races has always been the overriding goal. The winner isn’t necessarily the fastest driver, but more often than not, is the smartest.
That was the case Sunday afternoon at Delaware’s Georgetown Speedway where Stewart Friesen combined the game of tire management with the skill of going just fast enough to be in contention when the breaks fell his way. Tires were critical on this afternoon with an abrasive track rubbering up quickly. One by one, tires started popping. As the laps wound down, Friesen kept on running just quickly enough to keep his contenders behind him. Others did manage to keep their right rears under them the whole race – but none were as fast as Stewie. To further add to the drama, Friesen’s right rear tire gave up its last puff of air in the winners circle!
It was a perfect drive to victory, one not lost on the chilled but receptive crowd who knew they had just seen something special happen – News being made before their very eyes!
