This past off-season Lake Erie (PA) Speedway General Manager A.J. Moore was looking for a different type of event to bring to his asphalt race facility. The result of all his brainstorming was this past Saturday’s Grape Belt Triple Crown.
The Grape Belt event featured the ISMA-MSS Supermodifieds, the Race of Champions (ROC) Sportsman Modified Series and the very unique American All-Star Series which features crate style dirt track Late Models on asphalt.
The ISMA-MSS portion of the program featured the return of the Supermodifieds to Lake Erie for the first time since the Must-See Supermodifieds appeared there in 2013.
A field of 16 Supermodifieds, 20 ROC Sportsman and a disappointing nine American All-Star Late Models populated the Lake Erie pit area. A very respectable but far from capacity crowd filled the spectator grandstand.
“In 2013 we had the Must-See Supermodifieds here and everybody has been saying bring in the ISMA Supermodifieds,” Moore explained. “So, I decided to do just that. I added the Race of Champions Sportsman Modifieds and after seeing some tracks down south run some dirt cars on asphalt I decided to get with the American All-Star Series out of West Virginia dirt Crate Late Model class and do a dirt Crate Late Model race on asphalt.
“We’re paying really good money to the All-Star Series teams and I wish we had gotten some better local support but these guys put on a good show. We wanted more of their cars but we did this for the first year and we’ll see what happens.
“As far as the ROC Sportsman Joe Skotnicki (ROC promoter) does a great job and they support us and we try to support them as much as we can.”
The ISMA-MSS cars did well at Lake Erie producing lap times that dipped into the 12 second range and were very competitive. The appearance of ISMA-MSS at Lake Erie complimented very well when this group visited Lancaster (NY) Motorplex last month.
Lake Erie runs very few oval track, race car events now each season choosing instead to mix into their annual schedule a multitude of various other types of other events including drifting, Crash-A-Rama programs, Monster Trucks, a demo derby and a few other specials.
Moore scheduled the Grape Belt Triple Crown event into Lake Erie’s overall 2026 schedule.
“The Grape Belt event was something to try that fit into our schedule,” Moore said. “We will see if we can build on it. The Grape Belt Triple Crown is held right here in grape country so that’s where the name came from.”
Moore spoke about working with ISMA-MSS president Dan Soule to make the Supermodified portion of the Grape Belt Challenge a reality at Lake Erie.
“I know ISMA ran at Lancaster and they run all over and they’ve been a good group to work with so we’ll see what happens,” Moore said. “We have a decent crowd here today. Any promoter wants more but we’ll take this and I appreciate everybody coming out.
“Summer is going by fast. Our season of events is now the beginning of May through October so we do a lot of drifting and the Great Lakes Pro Am Series is doing great. People from as far away as Quebec come in for that so that does well as does the Crash-A-Rama and Monster Trucks.
“We’ve had to deal with Mother Nature like everybody else this year but we’ve done pretty well with all our events.”
Moore has been at Lake Erie for the last 20 years, first serving as Competition Director until his appointment to the General Manager’s seat in 2015.
Soule explained that getting ISMA-MSS booked into Lake Erie was far from an overnight process.
“Lake Erie was a terrific facility to come and visit tonight,” Soule said. “I hope we get the opportunity to bring more cars and come back. A.J. (Moore) was instrumental in getting this together. We actually talked about it for maybe three to five years now and we became strong enough to come here and hopefully we provided a good show for all the fans. The wait was worth it and we enjoyed coming here. I thank them for having us tonight. Hopefully we come back in the future.”
