Grandview Speedway has a reputation of being very difficult for invading drivers to conquer. With $7,500 to win on the line in Saturday night’s Bruce Rogers Memorial Money Maker, it was assumed that Grandview’s highly regarded regulars would be fighting for the top prize.
Instead, native New Yorker Mike Mahaney came into Grandview with, of all things, a Big Block motor in his car. He got a break picking the pole for the feature, never gave up the top spot, and won handily.
Along the way he battled his through a thicket of lapped traffic, ran away and hid from Stewart Friesen, Jeff Strunk and Craig VonDohren and cruised to the checkers. The usually unemotional Mahaney was ecstatic post-race, admittedly unburdened after a difficult start to his 2024 season.
For conquering one of the toughest tracks as an outsider, and doing so with style, Mike Mahaney was more than a winner, he was a Newsmaker!
