There are two ways about it. Chase Grennan’s drive to victory in last Saturday’s Islip 300 at NY’s Riverhead Raceway was wholly unexpected.
Grennan is 17. He was driving in just his third-ever Modified race. He battled door to door, on even terms, with established veterans. He used a veteran’s race sense planning pit stop strategy and executed it perfectly. Incredibly, Grennan was very much in charge of the 300 lap long distance grind most of the way.
It’s extraordinarily rare for someone so young and inexperienced at the upper level to crack even the top five in by far the biggest race of the season. For conquering Riverhead Raceway’s Islip 300 so unexpectedly, Chase Grennan is more than winner – he’s a Newsmaker!
