What a weekend it was in Oswego, New York for Canadian Mat Williamson! All told, Williamson earned in excess of $73,000 for winning both the 358 Modified 150 lapper on Friday night and the biggest one of them all, the Big Block Modified Super DIRT Series 200 lapper the next night.
The sweep came after staring down adversity at the very beginning. In practice for the 358 Modified race, Williamson’s car lost an engine. Another 358 Modified was available, but it was back home in Canada. The backup was rushed to Oswego but not in time for Williamson to time trial. He had to start last in his heat, and with no practice at all in the backup, he somehow put it in the show. Then he drove it to the front in the race.
By comparison, the Big-Block Modified 200 race was fairly easy, though several drivers, Larry Wight, Matt Sheppard and Jackson Gill among them, made their way forward only to fade.
In the end, Mat Williamson’s Super DIRT Week was an incredible and dramatic personal journey, if somewhat demoralizing to his competitors.
For sweeping the biggest, richest weekend in DIRT Modified Stock Car racing, Mat Williamson is a consensus Newsmaker!
